South Sudan’s sacked vice president, Riek Machar, has left hospital but will remain in the Sudanese capital of Khartoum for some time, his aide disclosed on Friday.
Machar is expected to meet the Sudanese president Omar al Bashir and also address the press in the coming days on developments in South Sudan, Sabt Makkouk, who is accompanying Machar added.
“Riek Machar left hospital this morning in stable health and has recovered … He will stay in Khartoum for some time,” Makkouk told Reuters.
South Sudan’s president, Salva Kiir sacked Machar from his post as first vice president after he (Machar) left the capital Juba in the wake of renewed fighting last month. The clashes that forced tens of thousands of people to flee was between forces loyal to both leaders.
Machar said he fled Juba to avoid an assassination attempt by government forces. He was picked up this month by U.N. peace keepers in Democratic Republic of Congo with a leg injury.
Sudan’s Information Minister announced on August 23 that Machar was in Khartoum for medical treatment.
